In this last of the Round 3 match-ups of comfort food, we have the last of thelong shots, the #10 seed Gyro Sandwich. I am truly amazed, but incredibly happy that one of my favorite sandwiches of my youth has lasted this long in the UCCFS. So far it upset the Cheesesteak in Round 1, then took out #2 seed Mashed Potatoes in Round 2. Can it take out one of the easiest and pleasiest sandwiches of all time, the Grilled Cheese? It will be another tough one for the Gyro, but even if it can squeak by another round, Ribs are waiting in the Elite Ate, and that won’t be pretty.

So what do you folks think? Which is sandwich is more comforting to you? Share your thoughts.

A little late than never. It is time for another off topic thread to appear for February. February is when ILoveItSpicy.com started 2 years ago, and it is also the month of love with Valentine’s Day. So if you come here to chat, post or engage with a fellow blogger, then I ask you to show him the love and respect that you would like to be treated with. I do not like when people attack each other, so stuff of that ilk will not be tolerated. Anyone stepping over the line, will be dealt with. Now go play nicely and have fun folks!

Comfort Food = Cheese. Not just cheese, but ooey-gooey cheesy goodness. You can’t have nachos without cheese, and lots of it in my opinion. I prefer shredded cheddar to the liquid cheese. Mac ‘n Cheese, well it is all about the cheese. Lovers of cheese unite! Mac ‘n Cheese is perfect for adding hot sauce too. Nachos is layers of fun and is far more flexible with ingredients than that of the Mac ‘n Cheese. Which way will you vote? Share your thoughts and opinions.

This is the last of the 4 reviews we have done for Ashlynn’s Gourmet’s Solomon’s Punishment haute sauce product line. I would like to thank Annthea Waugh and Greg Bodine for allowing ILIS to sample and review their spicy products. It seems based on the reviews so far, we have a new force in the chile community to be reckoned with. Their Asian Nightmare won a Golden Chile this past weekend, so a hearty congratulations for that worthy award. Our reviewers, (Derrick Wood, Firehead Thomas and Michael Hansen), totally fell in love with the Riddles of Sheba in the last review, so they do have some winners in the mix.

The Ultimate Chilehead Comfort Food Showdown is back! What better way to get back into it with a huge match-up like this one. We have the number one bbq grilled food vs the number one Italian favorite food. Kids and adults can embrace these two meals as what is truly the epitome of comfort. This is a hard one for me, as I love these two dishes very very much and it is hard to see one of them kicked to the curb. What do you think? Tell us how you voted and why.

It is no fun staying at home and hearing about all the things we miss at one of the big spicy events for the year. Zestfest is going to be a fun experience for all those that are lucky enough to attend. Hopefully a very profitable one for those that have a booth there. I had the experience to go to Zestfest a few years back when it was still held in Fort Worth, TX and it warm September. Now it is in Winter and you can’t exactly where shorts and a t-shirt and watch the bulls walk along through the streets of the Stockyards. There is a new venue, now 2 years old, and hopefully a little readier than it was last year when construction around the new Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas led to some confusion that might have kept some people away.

Hopes are very high, and we do share these hopes with the show promoters. Judy McCain Fuhrhop has been relentless on the Facebook Chileheads group page in waving the flag for the show. On Thursday she posted a message that gives me reason to have these hopes so high:

BREAKING NEWS: I just finished tabulating, scoring, and adding up approximately 5200 ballots for the 2012 Fiery Food Challenge! Want to know who won what? You’ll have to wait until FRIDAY NIGHT!!!!! (tee hee).

Friday Night it the big dinner where the Golden Chiles, (one of the most sought after spicy product awards in the entire chile world), are announced and handed out to the winners in attendance. My experience with it was one of tremendous appreciation. The support each company gives each other is quite admirable. Sure everyone wants to win, but you would not know it when you see all the smiles, back slaps and high fives exchanged between one company and another. We wish everyone good luck, and we hope that some of our close friends take some Golden Chiles home with them.

I wish I was there, but our reviewers Ken Alexander and Scott Roberts will be in attendance and reported back to us with some of the happenings. Check in with Scott on his site www.ScottRobertsWeb.com to see if he has anything fresh to announce. Ken will be getting us some exclusives at the show as well, and as soon I get anything I will bring it to you lickity-split. Here are the show details if you are in the neighborhood and wish to attend.

Out of the Ashburn Fire Department in Ashburn, Virginia the Fire Dawgs- Chief Miguel, Hector, Danny and new Fire Dawg Danny, taste and review this Ohio salsa. A little background taken from the Walt’s Homemade Salsa website:

The fresh taste of Walt’s Homemade Salsa is a combination of tomatoes, black beans, yellow and white corn, fresh red onion and red bell pepper plus a variety of spices, AND no added preservatives. And, that is just the Mild Salsa. The heat begins with the Medium Salsa by adding more spices. Then the true heat carries on in the Hot Salsa with freshly chopped jalapeno peppers and finally the X- Hot Salsa with jalapeno and habanero peppers. Our salsas truly are a flavor to savor. You be the true taste tester, try your choice of Walt’s salsa today…you won’t be disappointed. You can find it at various locations listed here on the website or buy online. Order some of our savory salsa today!

How did Walt’s Homemade Salsa begin?

I have always enjoyed preparing and cooking homemade meals for my family and friends. In the fall of 2010, my father gave me canning jars and a friend had spoken with me about making fresh salsa. This sparked a new idea to experiment with in the kitchen and a use for my father’s jars. After two months of working with my new experiment I came up with a salsa with a great taste, but some work still needed to be done. After a few adjustments, I came up with the recipes that are now known as Walt’s Homemade Salsa. The salsa is available in four flavors to please the taste buds of any salsa lover; mild, medium, hot and extra hot. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have enjoyed creating them for you. They are truly a Major flavor to savor!

This Ultimate Chilehead Comfort Food Showdown match-up is coming out of what appears to be your favorite Tex-Mex food bracket. The winner of this battle will go to the Elite Ate to face #5 seed Salsa & Chips. I really do not know how this vote will go down. On one side, Tacos is probably the most popular Mexican style meal in the world, whether it be soft or hard. One of the biggest franchises in the US, Taco Bell has a name people recognize. On the flip side of things, Chili is one of those dishes that every household makes and has their own special recipe, beans or no beans, and that is another battle unto itself.

I am a big cheddar cheese fan, and these 2 meals embrace the cheddar. I like to use sour cream as a cooling factor in both as well, something I can not say about any other kind of food. As I weigh both of these great comfort foods in my mind, I still do not know which one I will pick. Although, looking at the cover of the new Chile Pepper Magazine, I will admit that the timing of it might in the end influence me because of all the incredible looking recipes displayed throughout the mag. I am trying to stay impartial, but damn they look good. This sure is a tough one. Please tell us how you voted and why you did so.

Check out the new re-seeded bracket: UCCFS Bracket

Is this one going to be even close? Sure I love my Reuben, but against chicken wings in a Chilehead vote? This one might not be purdy. I will give it to the Reuben though, I was surprised that it survived to the Spicy 16. Beating the likes of Bologna & Cheese and Turkey w/ Stuffing & Gravy to get this far. Who knows, I might be wrong, two #1 seeds have fallen all ready. I do think Chicken Wings remains a huge favorite to win the whole Ultimate Chilehead Comfort Food Showdown. What do you think?

Our Fire Dawgs are back in action, and we have a new Fire Dawg we are introducing today, his name is Steven, and with his culinary background, we expect big things from him. Also, Miguel got a promotion to Chief, so he might not be available all the time for our reviews in the near future. Either way, we are happy for his new duty assignment and wish him the best. This is Hale’s Homemade “Holy Hale It’s Hot” version.

A little bit about Hale’s Homemade:

James and Angela Hale began making salsa in their Baltimore rowhome in 2006. Never finding a salsa they liked, they decided to make their own homemade salsa. After perfecting the recipe and sharing it with friends and family, the couple decided it was time to share it with the world! The Hales founded the company Hale’s Homemade in 2011. They are proud to offer Hale’s Homemade “Hale Yeah it’s MILD!” and “Holy Hale its HOT!” salsas, their first “babies” in the Hale’s Homemade family of products. The Hales hope to add other products to their line of all natural, preservative-free foods.

This is our second review out of four for Ashlynn’s Gourmet. They have a 4 haute sauce product line they call Solomon’s Punishment. This particular hot sauce is described on their website as “Aged, sun-kissed Habaneros licked with punishment”. Our review team is made up of Derrick Wood, Michael Hansen and Firehead Thomas. Firehead had a little issue with his filming of the video, so please forgive the size. Enjoy the reviews…

We did CaJohn’s Trinidad Scorpion BBQ Sauce last week to positive reviews. Now we are tackling this extremely spicy salsa made with presently the world’s hottest chile pepper. If you have ever tried any of CaJohn’s salsas then you know that they have a special quantity not found in your average store bought variety. Some of the best salsa in the business in my opinion. I personally list their Macioce’s Italian Salsa as one of my all time favorites. Throw in some Trinidad Scorpion peppers into a wonderful salsa blend, and you will be a wonderful salsa that is freakin’ hot. We are putting that theory to the test. Will the flavor of the world’s hottest pepper change the salsa in a good or bad way? Let us watch find out from our review team of the Machine, yours truly, and the Missouri Boyz- Scott Roberts & Ryan Graub.

Is their a better way to start your winter off then to be warmed up with a hot & spicy festival? I think not! We have a long list of spicy events you can attend throughout this year, but let us highlight the ones that are taking place in the weeks ahead.

With the start of 2012 one of the big events in the chile community kicks off the year in grand style. If you do not know yet, then you are out of the loop. It is the one and only Zestfest, which is 1 of 3 huge spicy events that you will find in the great state of Texas throughout the year, the Austin and Houston Hot Sauce Shows are the other biggies. Zestfest is also home of the Golden Chile Awards, one of the premier awards in this industry. It is a 3-day event that every chilehead must attend at some point in their life just to say they experienced it.

Right after that during President’s Day Weekend, we have the North Market Fiery Food Weekend in Columbus, Ohio, home of CaJohn’s Fiery Food. This event includes the special Fiery Asian Dinner Saturday night after the show is done for the day. The hottest Asian food you will ever eat. The event also intermixes amateur chili, salsa, hot sauce, and guacamole contests along with some eating challenges as well.

Then the first weekend of March explodes with the biggest hot sauce & gourmet show in the world, the Fiery Food Show in AlBuddahquerque, New Mexico. I am not sure you will ever attend a spicy food show with this type of following. People flock from all over the world to attend. Many companies get their first taste of the market at this show.

There are so many more worthy shows throughout the year, and it would be hard to go to them all even if you wanted to. We have the “Spicy Events” link on the left side bar that you can refer back to anytime to see the latest updates on the biggest fiery events throughout the year. I have compiled them right here for this thread, and while some shows have not updated their exact dates yet, we give you the latest
from those that have. The NOLA Show is still in talks on the venue and date, but we believe their desire for the last weekend of October is their goal right now. No matter what the date is, I will do everything I can to attend that show again, it was awesome.

Tell us which events you plan on attending this year. My plan right now is to do Gunther’s Gourmet Gala and Peppers at the Beach both in May, Bowers and Houston Shows in September and NOLA in October. The rest will have to be a wait and see for me as the dates get closer.
